Badrinath Temple is one of the four sacred dhams of the Char Dham Yatra and one of the most important Vishnu temples in India. Located at 3,133 metres in Chamoli district on the banks of the Alaknanda River, the temple houses a metre-tall black stone image of Lord Badrinarayan (Vishnu) in a meditative seated posture. For millions of Hindus, a Char Dham Yatra is incomplete without Badrinath darshan — and the opening of its kapat each May is celebrated as one of the most auspicious events in the Hindu calendar.
🛕 About Badrinath Temple
The Badrinath Temple is a stunning example of Garhwali temple architecture — a brightly painted façade in red, green and gold with a conical shikhara tower rising above the narrow valley. The main shrine houses a swayambhu (self-manifested) idol of Lord Badrinarayan made of black Shaligram stone. The sacred hot spring Tapt Kund just below the temple is where pilgrims traditionally bathe before darshan.
Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have established the temple in its current form in the 9th century CE after finding the idol in the Alaknanda river. Badrinath is connected to a rich tapestry of Hindu mythology — it is mentioned in the Mahabharata as the hermitage of Nara and Narayana, and in the Bhagavata Purana as the abode where Vishnu performed penance.
