Nestled high in the Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 3,497 metres, the Madhyamaheshwar Temple is the 2nd of the five sacred Panch Kedar shrines. Here, pilgrims come to worship the navel (nabhi) of Lord Shiva — a smooth stone linga representing the mid-section of the cosmic form that, according to legend, emerged here when the Pandavas pursued the great bull that was Shiva in disguise. Unlike Kedarnath and Badrinath which attract millions, Madhyamaheshwar remains refreshingly uncrowded — a profound, unhurried pilgrimage through meadows carpeted with alpine flowers and skies full of Himalayan peaks.

2026 Opening Date Confirmed: Madhyamaheshwar Temple kapat opens on 21 May 2026 at 6:00 AM during auspicious muhurat. The closing date falls in late October 2026 — exact date announced on Vijayadashami (Dussehra 2026).

🏔 About Madhyamaheshwar Temple

The word Madhyamaheshwar means "the lord of the middle" — referring both to Shiva's navel worshipped here and the temple's position midway in the Panch Kedar circuit. The temple is an ancient stone structure in traditional North Indian Himalayan architectural style, operated by the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC). In winter, the deity is ceremonially transferred to Ukhimath temple in Rudraprayag district for six months of worship.

The setting is extraordinary — the temple sits in a wide, bowl-shaped meadow at the base of the Kedarnath and Chaukhamba ranges, with unobstructed views of Kedarnath (6,940 m), Kedar Dome, Chaukhamba peaks, and the towering Neelkanth. At dawn, this meadow scene — mist dissolving over snow peaks, temple bells, and the scent of alpine grass — is among the most moving in all the Himalayas.
